Prospective students with entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences

Prospective students with a university of applied sciences entrance qualification also have the possibility of admission to the Bachelor's degree programme in Chemistry (B.Sc.) and the Bachelor's degree programme in Physics (B.Sc.). The prerequisites for this are that

  1. a general education that meets the requirements of the university and
  2. a special subject-related aptitude for the course of study.

can be proven before enrolment.

Prerequisite for participation in the examinations under 1. and 2. is the confirmation of the entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife) by the Registrar's Office. an application as explained here together with the Fachhochschulreife certificate.

Aptitude tests in German, English and Mathematics must be taken to determine the general education at university level. The aptitude tests are held at the university in the form of written examinations (duration 60 - 90 minutes), which must be completed and assessed by 15 September of the respective year. If individual examinations are not passed, a single retake is possible. Courses are offered to prepare for the examinations (approx. 60 teaching hours per subject). Attendance of the courses is voluntary.

Proof of special subject-related aptitude in chemistry or physics is provided by means of an assessment procedure:

For this purpose, an application portfolio with the Fachhochschulreife certificate (single copy), the confirmation of the student secretariat that the Fachhochschulreife has been obtained and a text not exceeding three pages commenting on the following points is required:

  1. Justification of the desired course of study against the background of the applicant's own career,
  2. Relation of the applicant's own idea of the course of study to the course of study offered at Paderborn University,
  3. Presentation and assessment of competences already acquired that are relevant to the course of study, and
  4. ideas about the future professional field.

The responsible assessment committee divides these applicants into three categories on the basis of their application portfolio: "admitted", "rejected " and "further procedure". The decision criterion is the assessment of the expected study success. The applicants receive a decision on this.

The applicants from the category "further procedure" will be invited to an aptitude interview. The date will be agreed with the applicants. The criterion for the decision is the assessment of the expected study success.

The decision for the category "rejected" contains a date at which another application can be made.

The selection procedure is intended to ensure an optimal fit between the abilities and inclinations of the applicants on the one hand and the requirements of the respective Bachelor's programme on the other. Even after enrolment, intensive support is provided to all students in the form of tutoring programmes, among other things, to ensure a speedy and successful course of study.
