The natural sciences form an important cornerstone of modern industrial and high-tech societies. Together with the disciplines of technical application they have a key role to play in the process of technological and social change. The results of scientific research and their wide-ranging applications create the basis for innovations that impact all areas of life in our society. And so they contribute substantially to securing the existential basis of the society in which we live. Responsible participation in this social and technological change calls for a comprehensive education and training in the natural sciences. This not only covers delivery of the knowledge and methods of the natural sciences, from principles all the way through to the latest research findings. It also involves a willingness and ability to subject the opportunities and limitations of scientific insights to critical examination and to use them in technological applications in a responsible manner. By asking and discussing questions on the future prospects and perspectives of human societies, an educational background in the natural sciences is able to contribute to advancing the development of our society. This is why the creation of fundamental competences in science and technology is of outstanding significance to a society of the 21st century.
Guiding Principle
Within the University of Paderborn, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and its activities serve to strengthen and advance the university's profile as a "University for the Information Society". These activities build on a guiding principle that calls for:
When performing these tasks, it is important, in particular, that those new opportunities are used which arise when networking the wide range of programmes, services and activities offered in the interdisciplinary fields of nutrition and consumer education, sports medicine and sports science with those offered in the disciplines of chemistry and physics.
